A series of paintings are currently under production celebrating Canada's famous RCMP Musical Ride. "When my husband, Paul Smith (marketing director for Creekside Studio) first told me of his idea to create a series of paintings based upon the Musical Ride, I was immediately flooded with images and excited about the potential and possibilities of such a series. I am a painter of horses, I am proudly Canadian and I am honoured to be painting part of our national heritage."

Also in the works is another illustrated childrens' book about the Musical Ride. It will be written by noted author Nikki Tate and published by Sono Nis Press. As part of the research for this book, Joan and Nikki spent 5 days in Ottawa touring both the RCMP Farm and Rockcliff Stables (home of the Musical Ride). "It was absolutely inspirational to see the level of commitment and organization that is involved in orchestrating the Musical Ride. This series will be a comprehensive overview of the Musical Ride including such aspects as the care and maintence of the horses, the training of both the horses and the officers, and daily life for those involved with the "Ride." After meeting some of the individuals and experiencing this wonderful environment, I am more committed than ever to creating a body of work that will honour the spirit of the men, women and horses of the Musical Ride."
